FAFSALive™: How It Works
Applying by phone is the fastest and easiest way for students and parents to complete
the FAFSA, and you needn't have a computer or Internet access to apply. Here's how
it works:
- Phone Interview and Consultation: When you call, you'll be connected
with one of our trained Student Aid Advisors, who will collect information from
you during a brief phone interview. This process is typically completed within 15-20
minutes. Be sure to review the information on this page for an overview of what
you can expect and a list of information to have on hand when you begin.
- Follow-up Discussion and/or E-mail Correspondence: We may contact
you by phone or e-mail to gather any additional or missing information needed to
complete your FAFSA.
- FAFSA Review: Once we have received all the necessary information
from you, your FAFSA will be compiled and reviewed for accuracy by a member of our
special Application Review and Processing Team.
- FAFSA Electronically Submitted: We electronically submit your FAFSA
directly to the federal processor, typically within 24 hours of finalizing your
application, or if you are applying prior to January 1st for the 2010-11 school
year, we will submit your FAFSA shortly after the federal processor begins accepting
applications in January.
- E-mail Notification: We will contact you by e-mail, typically within
24 hours of your providing us with the necessary information to prepare your FAFSA.
The e-mail(s) will notify you that your application has been completed and offer
instructions so that you may log in to your account under My FAFSA on our secure
website to review and track it online.
- Signature Page: Your e-mail will include a reminder to log in and
print your signature page (we can also mail this to you if you prefer). It is very
important that you sign the signature page and mail it to the federal processor
at the address specified.
IMPORTANT: Your FAFSA will not be considered “fully processed” until the signature
page is received. Any delay in sending your signature page may result in award delays
or denial of aid.
- FAFSAFirst™ Summary: If you complete your FAFSA form for the following
year before January 1st, you will be able to log in to your account and view a personalized
FAFSAFirst™ Summary. The FAFSAFirst™ Summary allows you
another opportunity to review your FAFSA information before it is submitted to the federal
processor when they begin accepting applications in January. It also includes a
preliminary estimate of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
- FAFSA Monitoring: We'll track your FAFSA status daily until it
has been “fully processed” by the federal processor and made available to your school's
financial aid administrators, sending you a confirmation notice via e-mail. You
can also log in to your account and check your application status online at any
time.
- Renewal Reminders: Because students must submit a new FAFSA application
for each school year they attend, we will send e-mail notices in the fall reminding
you to renew your subscription for the coming school year.

Hours of Operation
Our standard hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET.
During peak FAFSA filing periods (see our detailed Calendar for specific dates), we are open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. ET.
Although most telephone interviews are typically completed within
15-20 minutes, we highly recommend that you call no later than one hour before
closing to allow ample time for our Application Review and Processing Team to
complete your application.

When You Call
If you are a dependent student, it is helpful
for both you and a custodial parent to be available to speak with us, as we will
need information from both of you during the interview process. Placing our call
on speaker phone or talking on multiple extensions works well, or you may ask the
Student Aid Advisor to initiate a 3-way call from our Call Center.
If you and your parent are not available to speak with us at the same time, you
or your parent can still use the FAFSALive™ service. See Information Needed
to Complete Your FAFSA (below) for details on what information you'll need
to have on hand when you call.

Information Needed to Complete Your FAFSA
The following is a list of information and documentation that you should have with
you when you apply. Taking a few minutes to gather the necessary information in
advance will expedite your application process and help us ensure the accuracy of
your FAFSA.

*IMPORTANT: Because financial aid is often awarded on a first-come,
first-served basis, it is recommended that you submit your FAFSA application as
soon as possible after January 1st, or at least prior to your individual college
and state grant agencies' financial aid deadlines or preferred filing dates. The
earlier you submit your FAFSA, the better your chances of receiving consideration
for the maximum amount of available financial aid for which you may be eligible.
If you or your parents have not yet received your W-2s, or have not yet completed
your Income Tax Returns, you may estimate your income. Later, you will have an opportunity
to make final income changes on your Student Aid Report (SAR), which you will receive
once your FAFSA has been processed.

If Information Is Missing or Unavailable
If you can not provide some of the information we request during our call, we may
temporarily skip over that item in order to complete the rest of the interview.
Afterwards, we will review the missing item(s) with you and discuss the next steps—which
may be placing you on hold so that you can locate the missing information, requesting
that you call back and leave the information on our secure 24-hour voice mail system,
or asking that you submit the information to us via e-mail at
clientservice@FAFSA.com.
